Think you want a winter sesssion in Germany? Here’s everything you need to know

Mariah Carey is defrosting as we speak or possibly already in full ‘Ohrwurm’ terrority depending on when you are reading this (Ohrwurm: my favorite German lingo meaning involuntary catchy piece of music). So the jingle bell spirit is strong with ya, huh? Dreaming of Pinterest worthy winter wonderland photos?

Okay… well here are a few rather important things to think about if you have a winter session booked or considering hopping on the Polar Express train.

Tis the season

When you think of Germany you may imagine picture perfect Christmas markets, soft falling snow and easy breezy magical moments but while good ol’ Schland can be all those things on it’s best day, it’s important to prepare for our more typical winters here. Staying optimistic and flexible will give you beautiful results, with preserved memories that show you enjoying this season, stress free. And that is the ultimate present.

Bundle up

Our winters tend to be fairly wet, with short daylight hours and snow that sticks around til noon. All the more important to dress appropriately for wet cold weather and aim for late morning & noon start times. Gloves and hats for kids will keep them happy during these shorter winter sessions and happy is what we’re going for.

Keep in mind that if you aren’t a fan of the adorable rosy red nose look (hello cute Rudolph) that perhaps instead of an outdoor session during this season consider an in-home or lifestyle studio session. Again, I can’t stress this enough… Glove gloves gloves. Heck, even a winter snowsuit can look cute when the contents of said snowsuit are adorable.

It’s all ‘sleigh bells ringing’ until…

That moment you are standing in a crowd at the Christmas market and a little old lady is cluelessly blocking the photo. It’s a fun game to play while you are casually sipping Glühwein and people watching but during your photo session it’s vital to keep your cool while smiling or better yet laughing about it will automatically lift your spirits (and your kiddos). Blooper reels of grandma beaming at how genuinely joyful your family look are always a win in my book.

Include traditions & activities that you know your child absolutely loves

This goes for kids and adults alike! Talk to your photographer about ways to add a bit more cheer into your photos by incorporating activities that are authentic to your family. Bring a thermos of hot chocolate, buy some Glühwein from a market stand, snack on a bratwurst semmel or let your child show off something seasonal that they are proud they crafted. These small touches will breathe life into your photos, help you feel more like yourselves and keep your session flowing naturally.

Have fun!

DUH! Have fun and don’t worry about who’s looking or not looking at the camera and just have a blast. Chase your kiddos, have a tickle fight, sing jingle bells loud and proud, eat all the food. They will be thanking you and when you look back at these pictures you’ll remember that you had a heckin good time.
