Six tips to help you ROCK your fall session
Let’s get real here: does it get better than fall in Bavaria? Nope. You’ve probably heard me talking about fall sessions ALL summer. I’m so ready for the crisp air and soft afternoon light. It’s just an added bonus that I can eat pumpkin pie for breakfast. Just me? Cool.
Today I’m giving you six awesome tips to help you get the most out of your fall sesh!
Pick a great location
Don’t worry, I’m gonna help you with this one fam! If you’re feeling some serious fall colors, I have a couple exclusive spots that are gonna rock your world. I always share images of locations when my clients and I are discussing where we should shoot, and I always try to check out the location again closer to the date and send fresh cell pics.
2. Mind your colors
Fall means orange & plaid, right? Welllllll… kind of. It’s important for you to be the focus of the photographs, and to not let your outfits distract from that. It’s pretty simple to create a well-balanced look with a few minor tweaks. If your heart is set on plaid, be sure to pair it with a sweater or throw a jean jacket over top. If you want to wear orange, stick with a muted or burnt orange. Nothing bright and vibrant for fall (we can save those pieces for spring)! Mustard is a perfect fall color. Any neutral color will also work here, as long as it's not bright white. My favorite fall color is deep dark forest green or emerald. We also need to keep location in mind. Does it have a lot of open space and sky? Does it have a lot of green? You don’t want to disappear into the foliage with your color choices.
3. Dress comfortably
Fall is all about those cozy warm feelings, and that starts with what you wear! If you feel happy and confident in your outfits, you will look even better on camera. Textures are SO important here and I can't say this enough! The more texture the better: knit sweaters, sweater dresses with cable knit, chunky everything.
4. Pack extra clothes & essentials
Even if you think the weather is warm enough, dress in layers or at least bring them with you! It’s way better to be over-prepared, especially during the fall when the weather can change frequently. Add a base layer under your chosen outfits, or bring a jacket or shawl to throw over. Make sure the jacket is something you wouldn’t mind being photographed, especially for little ones. You may even want to pack a hat or a scarf if it’s cold enough. As with every session, bring along water, snacks, and comfort toys for babes.
5. Bring some fun props
I say “props” but I’m not encouraging you to bring pieces of furniture to your session! If you have a cozy knit blanket, or knit accessories like mittens or hats, that’s a great way to add some texture to your photographs that is unique to the fall season. Another option is a clear umbrella if you’re down for a romp in the rain.
I recommend this one on US Amazon! Or this one on German Amazon!
6. Stay flexible
Even with flawless preparation, we all know German weather can take a turn on us! It’s just the name of the game folks, so staying flexible and keeping a positive attitude is always key. During the planning stages, we can consider an indoor back-up location (like a cute café) if the weather takes a turn. Having this already planned will reduce the stress of a bad weather day! We’ll chat throughout the day of your session to stay on top of weather conditions and make a call 3-4 hours before session start.
