Is Iceland on your bucket list? If so definitely keep reading and if not still keep reading cause this blog is jam packed with all our travel pictures. Since there’s so much to cover feel free to use the index above to find the destination or topic you’ve been dying to see or find more about and scroll down to it’s section.
Day 1
Facts: Arriving at midnight is as bad as you image it will be. Tired. Hungry. All the feelings.
Must do: Arrange transportation from the airport, either via a shuttle service or check the bus schedule as no railways or direct links to the city of Reykjavik are readily available and the airport is very small and located in the middle of nowhere
Van/car rental: Get the full insurance friends. Just do it. Not only did our window chip the 1st night (or perhaps it already had a chip) and by day 2 was a full fledged crack through the middle of the window but the winds are no joke there and multiple times had other car doors slammed against the our van.
Tip: We could have slept at the van rental parking lot in our van and not needed to drive to Reykjavik campsite and pay for the 4 hours of sleep but it had been prepaid. This would have been great to know ahead of time.
What we did:
Thingvellir National Park
Seljalandsfoss waterfall
Gljufrabui waterfall
DC-3 Plane Wreck
Vik Camping
Day 2
Campsite: Höfn Camping
Facts: There is absolutely no restrooms of any sort during the drive through the moss valley of Eldhraun and very few opportunities to pull over. Be prepared ya’ll.
Must do: Reynisfjara beach at sunrise and although very touristy and crowded seeing glaciers can’t be passed up
Food: We found another parking lot opposite the main tourist one and were able to set up our camping equipment to cook our own lunch.
Tip: Shower and use the laundromat at the Vik campsite. They were by far the best and were newly renovated.
What we did:
Reynisfjara Beach
Eldhraun
Glacier Lagoon
Höfn Camping
Day 3
Campsite: Vik camping
Facts: Stokksnes is the most beautiful place ever. Hands down. But we were very lucky and the weather gods sent us a warm sunrise and clear day. Other tourists have reported being disappointed and having the mountains completely covered in fog and clouds.
Must do: Wake up early and make the drive to Stokksnes. Totally worth the entrance fee. Also stop and pet the Icelandic horses.
Food: We had coffee in the Viking Café and lunch back at Hofn campsite.
Tip: Don’t park in the sand unless you feel confident enough that you can get back out. Oopsies can and will happen and pushing a van back out is no biggie so don’t sweat it if it does happen.
What we did:
Stokksnes
Viking Village
Hjörleifshöfði (Star Wars Rouge One location)
Vik Camping
Day 4
Campsite: Reykjavik Camping
Facts: The weather will change in the blink of an eye. Bring rain gear.
Must do: Cannot recommend the Food Walk enough! The guide was friendly and the different stops were so varied from rye bread ice cream to the best hot dog in Reykjavik.
Food: We ate so so so much during the food walk. Go on an empty stomach!
Tip: If you are into cinematic Viking portraits get one done at Mink in Reykjavik.
What we did:
Reykjavík
Reykjavík Food Walk
Viking Photo Shoot
Reykjavík Camping
Day 5
Campsite: none/airport
Facts: The Blue Lagoon is pricy but the experience is worth it. The water outside wasn’t as warm as you’d expect especially with winds blasting you while in it but the showers and complimentary face mask and soaps were wonderful.
Must do: Shower lots and lots and condition your hair and leave the conditioner in as you are in the water. The mineral waters will dry your hair out so keep that free conditioner in.
Food: Had the most expensive cookie and coffee at the Blue Lagoon but ate the best fresh battered fish and chips at Papa’s Restaurant in Grindavik.
Tip: Get your museum tickets online as you’ll find they are often cheaper. We stopped at the Viking World on route to drop off the van and bought the tickets right before walking in. Also made a great spot to take shelter from the storm.

Papas' Restaurant in Grindavik
